PCA—Porsche Club of America Competition Rules (PCRs) The following items are submitted for membership comment/input prior to being finalized and implemented for 2017. Please submit your comments, in writing, to Dan Saxton (djsaxton@bellsouth.net) or any other members of the Porsche Club of America Competition Rules Committee (as listed on the Porsche Club of America website). Comments must be submitted prior to December 15, 2016, to be included in the final discussion and approval of the 2017 rules.

Road & Track—They say the future ain’t what it used to be. Maybe that explains why the oldest traffic light in America looks like something out of The Jetsons. It's the size of a 55-gallon drum, with four apertures, each shaped like an alien eye. A phonograph motor turns an internal mechanism that cycles lenses in each eye, red to green. From 1932 to 1982, that light directed traffic in Ashville, Ohio, population 4149.

New York Times—Porsche is adamant that it doesn’t sell transportation; it’s in the experience business. The automotive industry practically invented the hype machine, but Porsche has turned it into an art. The teenage memory of my first ride in a Porsche (a 911 Turbo, no less) is up there with my wedding day.

Fast Lane Travel—This past October, twenty PCA members joined Fast Lane Travel, Inc. for a fascinating tour of Cuba.  The group explored Hemingway’s home, a cigar factory, the Havana Club Rum Museum and the Almacenes San Jose artist’s market. Visiting NostalgiCar, a renowned restorer of classic cars, meeting members of Club de Autos Deportivos de Cuba who showcased their antique sports cars, and being driven through Havana in antique American cars were some of the many highlights of this tour. Join Fast Lane Travel this coming June 10 – 15, 2017 when they return for their second annual Cuba:  Cars and Cigars tour.  To view the photo book from this year’s tour click HERE.
 
The Smoking Tire via YouTube—Now that at least some versions of the 2005-2011 Porsche 911, aka the 997, are available on the used market for somewhat reasonable amounts of money, we feel obligated to drive as many of them as possible. This 2006 Carrera S is clean and completely stock.

Car and Driver—If you’ve read anything about Porsche’s junior sports cars, the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster, during the last year, you probably know that its mid-cycle update went well beyond the cosmetic nips and tucks typical of automobiles entering midlife.
 
MultiBriefs—Like most of you, I have a supporting collection of 968-related memorabilia in addition to my 968 cars. This includes model cars, posters, and many, many documents and brochures. But recently, I was shown a unique item that I had never seen before, an original MCO for a 968.

Road & Track—There's a reason the Nürburgring is known as the "Green Hell." It's one of the most challenging tracks in the world, with blind crests, fast sweepers, and almost no runoff. People crash all the time going the right way around, so imagine how tough it is doing a lap backwards. That's just what this rally team did, and they caught it all on camera.

Petrolicious—I first came across Rolly’s longhood at this year’s Luftgekuhlt 3. It ticks just about every box you could hope to tick on a build like this. Understated performance parts, mismatched yet somehow coordinating panel work, fiberglass wherever possible, plastic R windows. It also had the look of a machine that’s been enjoyed for ages and ages.

The Drive—Last weekend I took the long road trip down from Reno, NV where I reside to Ontario, California just East of Los Angeles for the annual Porsche nerd convention, the Porsche Club of America's "Tech Tactics" event. While I will have more on that event in a future post, this video recently loaded to YouTube, and being that it was the main attraction of the whole weekend, I figured it deserved its own post.

Houston Chronicle—Mike Reese bought his first sports car in 1979, a metallic gold 911 SC Porsche Targa.

"Taking delivery of the Porsche was unforgettable," Reese says. "Driving the Targa, I experienced one euphoric moment after another."
 
Motor1—The production version of the Porsche Mission E concept is still years away from arriving at dealers in 2019, but the brand is already expecting a strong demand for the electric sedan. Porsche boss Oliver Blume tells Germany’s Automobilwoche that the company thinks it can move 20,000 examples of the Mission E a year once the EV hits the road. Plus, there would be more electrically motivated vehicles from the automaker in the future.

Jalopnik—Dieselgate put a downer on anyone who needed an oil-burning Porsche to tow their Porsche to a race track. With a fix in the works for the Volkswagen Group’s 3.0-liter TDI V6 motor, Porsche will soon be able to sell you a “new” diesel Cayenne—but only by making them used cars with a hefty discount.

Petrolicious—Up on the shelves in my garage are boxes, the kind you buy at Staples or Office depot for keeping your tax records in, or maybe your kids drawings from kindergarten. I have about fifteen of theses simply labeled “slides”.
 
Car and Driver—We’ve been giving out our annual 10Best Cars awards since 1983. In the ensuing 34 years, more than 100 different models have earned at least one 10Best trophy. But if you’re a regular reader of this publication, you’ve probably noticed that some cars stick around on the 10Best list a lot longer than that. Reuters—Just as Porsche and Audi have fought for supremacy on the race track, the Volkswagen brands are now locked in a cut-throat battle to develop and manufacture the next generation of electric cars at a group embroiled in the "Dieselgate" scandal.

Road & Track—The word radical is overused to the point that it's lost its meaning, but there are few better words to describe Porsche's new 911 RSR. For the first time in the 911's 53-year history Porsche has moved the engine ahead of the rear axle, abandoning the car's most defining trait. Yes, Porsche campaigned a mid-engine 911 GT1 between 1996 and 1999, but that was a 911 in name only.
