| | PCA—Because of self-assured tag lines like “no substitute” and “nothing even comes close” plus the enthusiast magazine’s and road testers unabashed love for the marque, and because of Porsche’s consistent success on the track, the entire sports car world always seems to be gunning for Porsche. Over the years, there have been some serious and not-so-serious contenders. Here are a few
notable matchups. |

| | PCA—In this issue, learn about a special 345-horsepower Porsche 916, one that counts Corina Piëch as a former owner, in “Brutus” by Basem Wasef. Dave Mathews profiles one member’s recently resuscitated, patina’d 356 Convertible D, in “An Honest D.” There was a special class of GT4 Clubsport racers at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb this year, which Sean Cridland covers in “Cayman Country."
Wonder what a Porsche whose power is measured in kilowatts drives like? Find out in “Electric 911” by Nick Jaynes. In “The Crown Jewels,” Rob Sass visits the Porsche Archive at the Museum in Zuffenhausen. |
PCA—2018 marks the second year for the successful Porsche Club of America (PCA) Club Racing Vintage Racing Series. Drivers in the series enjoy plenty of time on track, with multiple practice sessions and three 30-minute races throughout event weekends.
| | Road & Track—Ferry Porsche’s sister had an adventurous life. Born in 1904, she never intended to play a big role in her father's company. But history decided otherwise. Having studied art history and painting in Vienna, she married the lawyer Anton Piëch in 1928. The couple had four children, and spent the war years near Lake Zell in Austria, along with 35 other members of the
Porsche clan. |
Ferro—70 years ago, a legend was born and stole the soul of mankind; made driving delightful and stayed in our hearts for decades. 70 years later, we are still in love and cherish its beauty. And for this, we,
at Ferro & Company want to treasure this historic automobile and share our love and enthusiasm by designing and creating a watch inspired by this iconic machine.

Petrolicious—In a warehouse somewhere in the industrial belt of northwest Germany sit two stunning orange 914/6 GTs. From a distance they look pretty much identical, but in fact they have diametrically opposed histories and purposes. One is a priceless ex-works car driven over the years by such Porsche dignitaries as Franz Konrad, Björn Waldegård, Jürgen Barth, and Olaf Manthey. The
other is nothing but an old road car shell that has been stripped out and prepared for rallying… And it’s this one, the replica, that I’ve come to see today.Read

PCA—Join us at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion Porsche corral and hospitality tent. After WERKS Reunion, join us at PCA Car Corral / Hospitality Tent at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 25-26. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the largest event held during the famed Monterey Classic Car Week, and is the only event where cars are doing what they were originally
intended to do…race. Watch the races trackside or relax in the Porscheplatz tent with a cool beverage and follow the action on live feed tv monitors. |
| | Jalopnik—A new Porsche race car is hardly news when it goes to the track. They have to do absurd things like break 35-year-old Nürburgring records to get our attention. Now, when a Porsche is built for off the track—that’s special. The rally Porsche Cayman GT4
Clubsport was the true highlight of Rallye Deutschland, and it wasn’t technically even racing. |
PCA—Every few years, Porsche Panorama conducts a survey of its readership to ensure that we produce the Porsche content you want to read about. Make the magazine yours by filling out the survey in its entirety. It should only take about five to ten minutes. Only current members and Test Drive participants logged in to the PCA website are allowed access to the survey.
| | PCA—To celebrate 70 years of Porsche, the world’s greatest sports car, Porsche Design has created a timepiece exclusively for Porsche Club of America (PCA) members: the Chronograph 70Y Sportwagen PCA Edition. Strictly limited to only 70 timepieces worldwide, this masterpiece pays tribute to the passion, commitment and camaraderie of PCA members, as well as the legendary Chronograph I,
the first-ever timepiece developed by Porsche Design. Watch purchasers have the option to receive their new timepiece during a ceremony at Rennsport Reunion VI. |
Petrolicious—The first time I call Rial he’s speaking to me from the guts of a late-model M5, but he didn’t grow up in cars like this. Raised by his mother, money was tight between her, Rial, and his three sisters, and with a deceased father the chance for a traditional “working on cars with my dad got me hooked” storyline never happened for him. But while a house full of women isn’t
the typical catalyst for motorsport, his Road & Track subscription was. | | Photo by Paul Steinbruner / courtesy Petrolicious |
| | Car and Driver—The combination of Porsche dynamics, 350 horsepower pushing a feathery 3090 pounds, and open-air romanticism continues to be one of our office’s great shared joys. |
Motor1—Having been the world’s fastest production car upon its launch, the Porsche 959 needs no introduction. Only 337 were ever made, but this 1987 example is actually rarer since it’s the Komfort specification of which only 294 cars were built. Even though it’s more than three decades old, the supercar’s odometer only shows 3,657 miles (5,885 kilometers) and the interior is in good condition aside from the expected wear
of the leather upholstery.

Track—Every car component needs to operate flawlessly between -30ºF and 130ºF, and manufacturers go to great lengths to meet that requirement. But finding real cold in a controlled environment is not getting any easier, spawning a technological battle between frosty territories all across the planet. Reading the news might explain why. |
Motor1—In a new video, Porsche once again teases its enigmatic Project Gold. The company promises "a classic body is the starting point for a vehicle that will ultimately become a truly unique piece," but so far it appears to be a 993-generation 911 Turbo S with an updated interior and wheels. The automaker's Classic division says this is a special machine requiring 18 months of construction, so there must be something very different about the car that the
firm isn't showing yet.
| | Motor1—Porsche's latest teaser for the Project Gold finally shows us what it uses for power and provides a better look at the bodyshell. We also see the complex wiring harness that's necessary to keep things going.Watch Video |
The Drive—Two years before the legendary Porsche 930-generation 911's production run ceased, a challenger emerged from a (then) small manufacturer in Pfaffenhausen, Germany. The RUF CTR exploded onto the Porsche chassis-based scene in 1987, and at its time of manufacture was the fastest production car in the
world, capable of speeds in excess of 211 miles per hour. Many would consider that, alongside the offerings from Singer, the RUF CTR Yellow Bird is the most desirable non-Porsche 911 in existence, and one is headed to auction later this month.
| | Road & Track—You meet people in this job. I first met Mark Webber in college, though, watching F1 on TV. Maybe not so much met as shouted at, across airwaves and distance. His car would come on screen, and my friends and I would yell “Mahk Webbah!” in this terrible fake Australian accent, every lap. Possibly because Webber is Australian. Also—lest I paint an incomplete
picture—because we were idiots. |
| | The Drive—Every turbocharged, air-cooled Porsche is pretty valuable, but the one that Mecum is going to auction off in October has an ownership history that makes it even more special. This 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo was originally purchased by legendary running back Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears. The car has been in the care of Payton’s son Jarrett since his death in 1999 and now
it’s available for ownership outside of the Payton family for the first time. |
InsideEVs—Electric plugs have been
sneaking into the Porsche lineup for some years now, starting with the 918 Spyder and Panamera S E-Hybrid in 2013. With the Porsche Taycan now scheduled to hit showrooms in late 2019, the shift from plug-in hybrids to all-electric models begins. Where will it all end? With the company’s storied 911 model, apparently.
| | PCA—Described as a museum springing to life, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the largest event held during the famed Monterey Classic Car Week, and is the only event where vintage race cars are doing what they were originally intended to do…race. And what better way to enjoy this step
back into history than to watch the races from the PCA Car Corral and Hospitality Tent? The Car Corral and Hospitality Tent are open to PCA members and Porsche owners. This year our Corral and Tent are located inside Turn 5. For those of you that attended the Porscheplatz at Laguna Seca, you know this is probably one of the primo-viewing areas on the track.

Auto Classics—A time-warp 1983 Porsche 956 Group C – the only example to have achieved victory on American soil – is to be offered at the RM Sotheby’s Porsche 70th Anniversary Sale in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 27.
PCA—PCA Hill Country Region (HCR) has worked with Circuit of the Americas to provide an exclusive ticket offer for PCA members planning to attend the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix, October 19 – 21, 2018 at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Austin, Texas. Motor1—The range-topping versions of Porsche’s 718 have been spotted countless times, but now we’re being given the rare opportunity to see the Cayman GT4 and the Boxster Spyder together while undergoing final testing. The camouflage is basically gone, although we have a feeling the exhaust system of both cars will go through some changes between now and the official debut. |
