PCA—Just like no discussion of any British sports car is complete without a gratuitous reference to the “The Prince of Darkness” otherwise known as the Joseph Lucas-supplied electrical system, it seems impossible for most punters to say anything about the 996 without mentioning the headlights. It’s the first and last refuge of someone with little else of import to say about the car. Enough already. Nobody complained about
the same headlights on the Boxster or the GT1. The 996 is a great Porsche, and the first year is particularly captivating. It’s a Porsche we should all be shopping for at the moment.

Trend—There is a heavy stillness in the air, the weight of expectation.
Less than an hour before, our resident pro driver, Randy Pobst, had flung the mighty McLaren 720S around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 1 minute, 29.78 seconds—the fastest lap ever recorded in the history of our Best Driver's Car competition. Now, he's powering the 911 GT2 RS down the infamous Corkscrew, the echoes of
the Porsche's barrel-chested bellow, so much like the iconic 935 racer, cascading through the surrounding hills.

The
Truth About Cars—Porsche will quit offering diesel powertrains for its cars and light trucks, effectively adding another nail to the fuel’s coffin. Following Volkswagen Group’s emission’s fiasco in the United States, which included Porsche, Europe has become increasingly critical of diesel-engined vehicles. Citywide bans have have been proposed throughout the region and, as of February, Porsche suspended diesel sales due to an ongoing German probe into VW Group’s diesel
engines. |

| | Jalopnik—An unhappy fact about my life is that, more than likely, I’ll never own a Porsche 911 GT3. The silver lining, however, is that I’ll never have to helplessly watch my 911 burn down on the Nürburgring. |
Road & Track—Rally videos never get boring. This one, taken from inside the cabin of an air-cooled Porsche 911 from an event last weekend in Germany, might be one of the best. This clip comes to us from rally YouTuber McRallye, and features drivers Andreas Dahms and Inka Lerch piloting a bright green air-cooled 911 during the first stage of the Lower Saxony
Rally in Osterode, Germany.

| | Motor1—Bicycles and cars don’t mix. Nine times out of 10, one is mad at the other for various reasons often about who has the right of way – and who should park where. It’s an often volatile encounter filled with profanities and profane, spastic hand gestures waving in the air. But the two can aid one another when the situation requests it. Just take this modified Porsche Cayenne Turbo
who helped a bicyclist achieve a new world record thanks to simple physics. |
Road & Track—Now, this should be good. The McLaren 720S is absurdly quick in a straight line—like, runs-the-quarter-mile-as-quickly-as-a-Bugatti-Veyron-Super-Sport quick. The only rear-wheel drive car we've tested that beat its 9.9-second quarter-mile time is the LaFerrari. But, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS seems like a worthy challenger.Watch Video
| | Jalopnik—The German tuning outfit TechArt has been playing with Porsche Cayennes for a long time now, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time they’ve teamed up with a company that makes couches. Yes, finally, TechArt has a tuning kit for the Cayenne that not only ups its power output a good bit and has a bunch of
exterior bodykit stuff, but it also teamed up with high-end furniture maker Rolf Benz to couch-ify the interior. Too bad it now looks like it’s full of bad dorm room sofas. |
The Truth About Cars—We’ve long bemoaned the death of the manual transmission. But with few practical advantages other than being more enjoyable to a limited subset of the population, it’s quickly (and understandably) slipping into obscurity. It’s not alone.
Based on research conducted by online automotive marketplace CarGurus, the good ol’ handbrake is also rapidly losing relevance as automakers shift their focus to electronic parking brakes. |

| | Jalopnik—Perhaps the greatest moment in Porsche lore is when Mark Donohue set a world closed-course record for the fastest average lap speed in history. All that time ago, Donohue managed to run an incredible 221.12 miles per hour in a modified Porsche 917/30, a record that would stand until 1987. Porsche has a retired mega sports car with serious power onboard that is running outside
of its original rulebook specs in the 919 Evo. They really need to go back to Talladega. |
The Truth About Cars—Roughly one year ago, German automakers were confronted with a crisis. Following Volkswagen’s diesel emissions fiasco, European antitrust regulators became suspicious that BMW, Daimler, and VW Group were involved in a longstanding automotive cartel that cooperated on decisions regarding technical issues, development, supplier management, and illegal price fixing.
Investigators were also concerned manufacturers worked together to standardize diesel treatment fluid (AdBlue) reservoirs to reduce exhaust emissions, then encouraged each other to cheat on emissions tests when they were deemed insufficient. |
