1. Porsche sales that mattered at the 2018 Monterey Car Week auctions

PCA—There's an old political adage: “As Maine goes, so goes the nation.” These days, you could almost say, “as the Porsche market goes, so goes the collector car market.” Porsches made up almost 12% of the total number of cars consigned at the Monterey Car Week auctions. Out of the 166 Porsches that were sold, a few stood out as particularly significant. These are some of the key takeaways.

2. Porsche 356s aren't just for polishing

PCA—As a Gen-X Porsche fanatic I grew up enthralled by the sensual curves of the 911 Turbo, the 928’s muscular shoulders, and the not-so-subtle box flares of the 944. Myriad impact bumper 911s, front-engined Porsches, and the occasional 914 or early 911 populated my world. By the early ’80s I had already mentally relegated the 356 to the purview of men of my grandfather’s generation — lined up at Porsche shows by people enthusiastically dusting them with baby diapers and the occasional showing at our local community parade. Certainly I was well aware of the 356’s place in Porsche history, but as a young man I was drawn by horsepower, skid-pad numbers, and, sadly, a small desire for the status afforded a young man piloting a late-model Porsche. The 356 simply didn’t factor into my world.

3. Video: Porsche rolls endlessly at Nurburgring endurance race

Autoblog—If you don't watch any other Nürburgring videos today, watch this one. J2 Racing's John Shoffner, an American, was taking part in the sixth race of the VLN endurance championship on the famed Nordschleife track when he lost control of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup after the Flugplatz straight. As seen on this video, posted on YouTube by the Eifeler888 channel and reported by Nürburgring fansite Bridge To Gantry, the Porsche rolls several times, even brushing the fencing, before finally coming to a standstill on its roof. Bridge To Gantry rightfully comments that it's thanks to modern safety devices such as the HANS restraint that the driver is okay after such a wild ride.

4. Why the 1999 911 Carrera is a Porsche we should all be shopping for

PCA—Just like no discussion of any British sports car is complete without a gratuitous reference to the “The Prince of Darkness” otherwise known as the Joseph Lucas-supplied electrical system, it seems impossible for most punters to say anything about the 996 without mentioning the headlights. It’s the first and last refuge of someone with little else of import to say about the car. Enough already. Nobody complained about the same headlights on the Boxster or the GT1. The 996 is a great Porsche, and the first year is particularly captivating. It’s a Porsche we should all be shopping for at the moment.

5. A VP at the Largest Porsche Dealer in America Just Vanished with $2.5 Million in Buyer Deposits

The Drive—As vice president of marketing at the largest Porsche dealer in the country, Shiraaz Sookralli personally handled some of Champion Porsche's most valued and deep-pocketed clients. Over the last year, he collected over $2.5 million in customer deposits for dozens of the company's ultra-exclusive 911 GT3 and GT3 RS models.
