PCA—The PCA National Office held its annual PCA Open House gathering and car show on Saturday,
| |
September 14, and while some in the past have been wet and rainy or hot and sweaty in the late summer sun, this year’s event had the perfect mix of 70°-80° partly cloudy weather to keep attendees and their Porsches perfectly comfortable to enjoy each other’s company and tasty barbecue.

PCA—A popular PCA member benefit is The Mart, the club’s classifieds section online and in each issue of Porsche Panorama. Mart Fresh is a bi-weekly column in which PCA media staff and guest contributors pick what they think are the "freshest" Porsches currently available, and then attempt to explain their reasoning. Up
this week are a 2014 Panamera GTS, 2010 911 Carrera, 1999 911 Carrera, and 1975 914 2.0.

Petrolicious—It was a big weekend for all things Porsche, and the PCA was not to be outdone. Celebrating their 58th annual Concours d’Elegance at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, the Los Angeles Region made sure there was something for everyone. On a gorgeous Sunday, the hangar, and the surrounding areas glittered
with beautiful examples of the Porsche lineup. Additionally, we were there hunting for candidates for the Petrolicious Best Story Award. More on this further down.

| | PCA—PCA is thrilled to be able to offer for sale 11 New-Original-Stock TFA Car Company Porsche soft sculpture pillows. many other notable racing accomplishments). These pillows are new condition “vintage” and sought after by collectors worldwide.
These stuffy creations were licensed by Porsche AG in the 1970s. We currently have 11 of these pillows, and they will be offered for sale on a first-come basis. Large Luxury pillows with wheels that actually turn (16”x8”x8”) are $225 plus shipping and the Minis (11”x5.5”x5.5”) are $100 plus shipping. The Smoking Tire via YouTube—The Porsche GT3 RS is the sharpest scalpel the company will sell you. It has the hottest version of their flawless N/A engine: 4 liters, 520 horsepower, no turbos. It has the sharpest, fastest gearbox on the market. It's nearly a race car, and yet, there is zero reason not to use one as a
daily driver. Before we start driving 992's next week, it's time to set the barometer. (Ed.: Please note, some of the language in this video may not be safe for work and/or appropriate for children.)

| | Road & Track—The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and Spyder debuted earlier this year with a new engine—a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six based loosely on the 3.0-liter twin-turbo in the new 911 Carrera. This engine is cheaper to build than the 911 GT3's exotic 4.0-liter, and designed specifically for mid-engine cars. And it's going to stay that
way.
|
Motor Trend—We've already established that the modern 991-generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS is an absolute monster. It's only one hundredth of a second slower than the fastest car ever to lap our figure-eight (the $986,000 McLaren Senna) and it's captured more than a few lap records at racetracks around the
country.
| | |
The Drive—When Porsche announced that its Taycan electric sedan had completed a lap around the 12.8-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 42 seconds, the world became a little bit more interesting. Not only had the German sports car builder recognized that battery power had matured enough to be an
alternative to gasoline, but it had also proven that it could be fun by 'rounding the 'Ring just as fast as a 911 GT3. Of course, Porsche wasn't the first automaker to show off just how enjoyable electric propulsion could be.

| | PCA—Join Porsche Club of America and Porsche Cars North America for the Porscheplatz at Road Atlanta for the 2019 Motul Petit Le Mans / IMSA Weather Tech Sportscar Championship. more. Watch the races trackside from the tent or just relax, enjoy a cool beverage, and watch the races via live feed TV.

Motor Trend—The electric performance revolution is underway, and the tables have turned. Despite its illustrious history, Porsche is the upstart with its Taycan all-electric sedan. Meanwhile Tesla's Model S is the icon of the space—an odd designation to bestow to a vehicle less than a decade old.

Autoblog—With the Porsche Taycan about to compete with Tesla in the marketplace, Elon Musk has decided to compete with Zuffenhausen’s finest on the track. After a Taycan Turbo set a record for fastest EV around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 42 seconds, Tesla is scrambling to best that with modified
Model S P100D prototypes that Musk says will eventually become a production model. A Ring record attempt could come any day from Tesla — but not today, when Nürburgring videographers caught the Taycan lapping the Model S not once, but twice as the Tesla sat broken down awaiting a tow:

| | Petrolicious—The 996 series 911 was a controversial model when it was released, featuring divisive styling cues and Porsche’s first-ever water-cooled flat-six. It may have saved the brand from financial ruin but it took some time for fans of the marque to appreciate the virtues of what was the first of a new generation of 911s.
|
Jalopnik—I just drove the Porsche Taycan, and though I can’t give you a full review until later, I can say what the Porsche Taycan’s P.R. Manager told me at dinner about Tesla’s Nürburgring record attempts and Elon Musk’s Porsche Taycan-related tweets. As he pointed out, Tesla has helped Porsche more than it hurt
it.

Autoblog—Volkswagen and Porsche have to recall around 227,000 cars due to problems with airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners, Germany's Stuttgarter Zeitung said on Thursday.

Road & Track—It seems like just yesterday the latest and greatest supercars were having trouble getting into the low seven-minute range on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. But these days, the top six fastest Nurburgring lap times are all under the seven-minute mark. Even a "normal" 911 Carrera S is now capable of a
wildly impressive time.

| | Petrolicious—You might know that 2019 marks 50 years since the inception of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). Porsche has played a big part in this racing series over the decades and to honor its golden anniversary it has been painting its current race cars in some of the marques most iconic historic liveries. This year’s Motul Petit Le
Mans will see the two Porsche GT Team Porsche 911 RSR race cars finished in the red and white Coca Cola livery that the famous Bob Akin Motor Racing Porsches used over a seven-year period.

Hagerty—I've lost money on a car. Again. About a year ago, I bought a clean, one-owner 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo in need of some engine work for $5500. “Some” turned out to be “a bunch.” I put out calls for help, and car folks, like always, pitched in with enthusiasm. Local 924 expert Vaughn Scott offered a 24-hour tip
line and lent me his factory service manuals. Chris Braden, proprietor of Detroit-area Munk’s Motors, sourced parts and used the 924’s brakes to show a group of enthusiasts how to rebuild calipers. Editorial assistant Cameron Neveu became assistant mechanic as I tackled the intimidating job of assembling an engine for the first time. Triumph fanatic Richard Truett spent an entire Saturday helping install said engine and didn’t laugh the next day when I told him I had forgotten the rear main
seal, a critical part that can only be pressed in with the engine out. Yes, I installed the engine twice.

| | Motor1—With a naturally aspirated V10, three pedals, and not that many electronic nannies to dilute the sheer driving pleasure, the Porsche Carrera GT is widely regarded as being the last true analog supercar. It still looks epic more than 15 years after its release, so what’s not to love about the 918 Spyder’s predecessor? Well, quite a few things, at
least according to someone who owns one of the 1,270 cars produced by Porsche back in the 2000s.
|
| | Roadshow by CNET—One of the main things that performance car enthusiasts cite when they rail against switching to an electric car has nothing to do with actual performance -- it's the sound. Look, I get it. The sound of a high-revving flat-plane V8 or a howling flat-six is amazing, and comparatively, the relative lack of sound of an EV does take away from
the drama of driving quickly and in a spirited fashion.

Joshua, 17, has been granted a wish to go to Porsche in Germany in 2020, according to representatives from Make-a-Wish Middle Tennessee.
